Introduction for 1998 Season
During the season of 1997, trench CA42 was opened in N1-6/W11-16 in order to investigate the occupational evidence discovered in preceeding years in the area ( TT IV p. 1-53 ; JB IV p. 1-149 ; JB III ; JB V ; JB VII ), which included rectangular stone packings and formes indicative of metallurgical production. In the course of the excavation of CA42, a regular stone structure was uncovered in meters N3-4/W13-14, which turned out to be a well. A fragment of the terracotta horse race frieze plaque dating to the archaic period, found on top of the well, gave a terminus post quem for the structure.
In light of this significant new
occupational evidence, it has been decided to return to CA42 this season in order to further investigate the relationship between the well (CA42), the stone package (CA36, CA41), fornoes (CA33), and the road which passes about 10 m NE of the well.
The goal this season is to further excavate the well and to investigate the area around it. For that purpose, a 2x2 m trench will be established tangential to the west side of the well in meters N3-5/W14-15 (see p. 126-127 for the illustration).
Another trench, 3x5 m, will be established in the area immediately north of CA42, meters N10-14/W11-13, to be investigated for the presence
of any archaeological material.
The trenches will be layed out according to the master grid system. For information on master grid, see TT I p. 173 .

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.
The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
