AM

Now that the rain ahs dried up the stratigraphy of the trench has become somewhat more clear. The top 2/3 of the trench is still the brown soil of Locus 2 but around the 3rd meter of the trench there is a differnt soil which appears more white (but is brown when trowled through). A similar featuer seems to be apparent in Cindy's trench (see CBO-I p ). We are going to remove the large stump in the SW corner of the trench in order to try and better trace the soil in the baulk walls.

The large stump was removed from the SWS corner of the trench. The baulk walls around the area were trimmed adn the terracotta cound for the removal of the stump and the baulk trim numbered 1/2 a casetta. Pickpassed through the top of the trench which was still in locus 2. The new part of the trench (the whiter soil) will be designated Locus 3.

PM

Pickpassed through the top 1/3 of the trench. One of the pick hits appeared to have revealed another layer - a grey chalky/flakey soil which is similar to the galestra seen in T-28 above the tile spread. It will be designated as locus 4. We are conditning to sift the dirt from Locus2 and will then trowel down to the locus 4 layer (carbon and very burned terracotta abundant). Closing elevations were taken.
