Description Small sphinx statuette has flat rectangular base with a small round hole in it at 0.014 m from front edge, approximately in center of width - hole does not extend to other side of piece; the figure is a crouching sphinx with a longish bean-like body; the flat-sided legs are set along the edges of the base; the paws are chipped but show traces of two grooves indicating the claws; the rounded rump shows two grooves in the back indicating the tail; the upper part of the rear legs are rounded and meet the lower parts of the wings; the belly area is indented; the wings begin at the back of the shoulders and slope upwards; grooves run parallel to their contour; the feathers are rendered by horizontal lines on one side, by diagonal lines on the other; the back is smooth; the chest protrudes slightly between the forelegs; neck is only a slight constriciton between the chest; face is squarish with deeply set features, triangular nose, two parallel ridges pinched at corners for lips, heavy chin, triangular bulging eyes (left eye is slightly larger); hair hangs in tresses at sides of head, the tresses closest to the face taper slightly towars the top and have diagonal notches at front and back, the second tress on either side is diagonal notched on the surface, the back of the head is smooth but shows traces of a horizontal band near the top.
