Pyla-Koutsopetria Archaeological Project II: Geophysics and Excavation
Datasets associated with excavations, geophysical prospection, and aerial photography at Hellenistic, Roman, and Late Antique sites in southern Cyprus.
The buried coastal sites of Pyla-Vigla and Pyla-Koutsopetria- near Larnaca, Cyprus, have produced rich archaeological assemblages dating to the late classical-early Hellenistic period and late antiquity. The Pyla-Koutsopetria Archaeological Project (PKAP) previously investigated these sites through a program of pedestrian survey (2004-2011) across 100 ha of the micro-region; the visitor may view and download the data from this earlier research program at the Open Context site, "Pyla-Koutsopetria I: Pedestrian Survey." This new dataset publishes the results of the second phase of investigation (2007-2018), which included remote sensing, geophysical prospection, and excavation at Vigla, a fortified ridgetop settlement dating to the late 4th-early 3rd century BCE, and Koutsopetria, a sprawling coastal town that flourished in the 5th-7th century CE. Teams conducted ground-penetrating radar across some 70 units typically 20 x 20 m in dimension in and around these sites, and excavated ten small trenches at Vigla (2008, 2009, 2012, 2018) and two trenches at Koutsopetria (2009). Excavation units were small (typically less than 3 x 3 m) and followed natural and cultural stratigraphic units; all earth was sifted through 1 cm sieves and all objects collected. Excavated finds were processed, analyzed, and stored at the Larnaca District Archaeological Museum.
The datasets include images of low-altitude aerial photography, excavation units, and objects; data files generated through Ground-Penetrating Radar; GIS shapefiles showing locations of excavation units, geophysical prospection units, and buried features; and csv files containing the stratigraphic unit forms, catalogue of objects, and analyzed finds.

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.
The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
